Laparoscopic Spays
We have performed over 150 laparoscopic spay procedures in the last few years.
Owners who have previously had their pets spayed with the old open surgical technique are amazed at how much quicker their pet’s recovery is with the laparoscopic spay. There is less pain, less trauma and recovery time is quicker.
Laparoscopic spay involves removal of the ovaries through a small incision, which prevents unwanted pregnancies, unwanted seasons, has the benefit of preventing womb infections in later life, and if done early enough reduces the incidence of mammary tumours.
Anaesthetic
The downside of neutering is, of course, an anaesthetic and surgical procedure. However modern anaesthetics are far safer than they used to be. These modern drugs are more reliable and the monitoring equipment is better. Our surgery opened in 2005 and in that time we have not had a routine anaesthetic death. We believe our anaesthetics are as safe as they can be
Complications
Complications with laparoscopic spays are rare partly as we only remove the ovaries (unless of course there is a problem with the uterus). When I started surgery many years ago, we were taught to remove the ovaries and uterus – it has since been proven that it is unnecessary to remove the uterus especially if neutered early. With the laparoscopic spay, we can see the ovaries very clearly on a tv screen, and the surgery is very accurate and safe.
Recovery
All your dog will have on recovery is 2 or 3 small wounds on the abdomen which should heal without any further ado.
We have faith in the cleanliness and sterility of our theatre, as well as our surgical technique to the extent that since opening in 2005 we have not used antibiotics for routine surgical procedures. Unnecessary use of antibiotics is counterproductive for your pet and leads to antibiotic resistance in both human and veterinary medicine.
Our dogs that undergo laparoscopic spay are given a cocktail of painkillers before, during and after surgery to keep them out of pain. They also have a K-Laser treatment immediately after surgery, which again reduces pain and aids healing.
We believe that in our hands laparoscopic spay is far more comfortable, and safe for your pets.
