{"id":229,"date":"2013-06-04T21:48:04","date_gmt":"2013-06-04T21:48:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pottonvets.co.uk\/?p=229"},"modified":"2026-03-17T10:53:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T10:53:09","slug":"dog-lumpy-tongue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pottonvets.co.uk\/prometheus\/dog-lumpy-tongue\/","title":{"rendered":"Dog &#8211; lumpy tongue"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\nLast year a very observant owner noticed a lump on his dogs tongue, and brought him to the surgery for examination.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThere were no other abnormalities found on clinical examination.<br \/>\nFrom a patients point of view it is important and necessary to make an accurate diagnosis, check for other associated conditions, and remove the mass.<br \/>\n<strong>How did we approach this case:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nFirstly we performed cytology (we use a thin needle to take a small sample that we can examine under a microscope).\u00a0 From this we could tell that this was not an infectious or inflammatory process, and that it was a true growth (tumour).<br \/>\nOnce we knew we were dealing with a tumour, it became important to find out whether it was likely to be malignant (the bad tumours that either spread to other parts of the body, or recur when removed), or benign (no further problems once removed, or may spontaneously disappear).<br \/>\nWe also knew that it was unnecessary to send bacterial cultures and antibiograms (grow bacteria and find out which antibiotics they are sensitive to) to a laboratory, as there was no indication of infection.<br \/>\nHowever we knew that it was important to check to see if there was any evidence of related underlying disease, and to check for potential spread of the mass.\u00a0 Screening blood tests and chest x-rays were negative for related problems.<br \/>\nOnce these routine procedures were completed we performed a wedge biopsy, in which we cut a small section or wedge from the mass.\u00a0 This was then sent to an external laboratory where the mass is sliced into very thin sections and examined under a microscope by a veterinary pathologist.\u00a0 The advantage of histopathology over cytology at this stage is that the structure of the mass is maintained, and a more detailed analysis of the mass can be made.<br \/>\nCytology and histopathology are complementary procedures.<br \/>\n<strong>Now we waited for the histopathology report<\/strong>:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pottonvets.co.uk\/prometheus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/8bfdb3d4-5f4c-11e1-a685-0050568626ea.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-731 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pottonvets.co.uk\/prometheus\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/8bfdb3d4-5f4c-11e1-a685-0050568626ea-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"IMG00805-20111101-1316\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe histopathologist confirmed that this was calcinosis circuscripta.\u00a0 With the information we had available, we knew the following important points:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It was a benign mass<\/li>\n<li>There were no indications of it being associated with any other condition.<\/li>\n<li>It was likely to resolve completely with removal.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>The final part:<\/strong><br \/>\nWe anaesthetised the patient and removed the mass.<br \/>\nThis healed without complication and our patient is continuing to live in good health.<br \/>\nHappy dog, happy owners, happy result.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pottonvets.co.uk\/prometheus\/wccms-admin\/staging\/wccms-resources\/9\/9\/c\/f\/596f049a-5f4c-11e1-a685-0050568626ea.jpg\" alt=\"Informative image: tumour from dogs tongue calcinosis circuscripta\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/>For your interest:<\/strong><br \/>\nCalcinosis circuscripta is a rare condition in\u00a0 dogs (and other species), where a mass is formed by abnormal calcium deposits.\u00a0 Complete removal is usually curative.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year a very observant owner noticed a lump on his dogs tongue, and brought him to the surgery for examination. &nbsp; There were no other abnormalities found on clinical examination.
