{"id":236,"date":"2013-06-04T21:53:22","date_gmt":"2013-06-04T21:53:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pottonvets.co.uk\/?p=236"},"modified":"2026-03-17T10:53:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T10:53:09","slug":"dog-lumps-and-bumps-histiocytoma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pottonvets.co.uk\/prometheus\/dog-lumps-and-bumps-histiocytoma\/","title":{"rendered":"Dog lumps and bumps &#8211; histiocytoma"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<h2>What is a\u00a0<strong>Histiocytoma<\/strong>?<\/h2>\n<p>These are usually angry looking, raised, hairless masses found on the skin of young dogs.<br \/>\nThe most common areas are on the head, limbs and ears (often the front end of the body).<br \/>\nThese are benign lesions and usually regress within a period of 3 months.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" alt=\"Informative image: Histiocytoma Skin lesion PottonVets\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pottonvets.co.uk\/prometheus\/wccms-admin\/staging\/wccms-resources\/8\/5\/5\/3\/08c80d26-4e7a-11e1-a685-0050568626ea.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"193\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 224px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 224\/193;\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to make a diagnosis:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Appearance<br \/>\nAge of the dog<br \/>\nLocation<br \/>\nCytology<br \/>\n<em>Cytology is a very useful tool in diagnosing histiocytoma, the appearance is relatively typical.\u00a0\u00a0Cytology also\u00a0helps to exclude other growths\u00a0which can\u00a0look similar.<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What to do once a histiocytoma is diagnosed:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Once we are confident that a lump is a histiocytoma and it is not causing distress, we tend to monitor them regularly and allow them to regress spontaneously \u2013 this usually happens in 6 to 8 week period.<br \/>\nHowever these masses can be very irritating or be associated with infections\/reactions, or regression may not progress as expected \u2013 in which case medication or removal and histopathology is indicated.<\/p>\n<h2>\n<strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" alt=\"Informative image: Histiocytoma Microscopy PottonVets\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.pottonvets.co.uk\/prometheus\/wccms-admin\/staging\/wccms-resources\/8\/b\/7\/a\/bf997068-4e79-11e1-a685-0050568626ea.jpg\" width=\"192\" height=\"190\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 192px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 192\/190;\" \/>Can\u2019t we just leave all lumps to see if they disappear?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The simple answer is \u2013 this is a bad idea, and not in\u00a0your pets best interests. There are many lumps that can look similar, some of these are very malignant, and the sooner they are removed the better. For example, mast cell tumours (MCT) are a very common and malignant tumour and can look exactly the same as a histiocytoma.
